Bipolar Behaviors

Understanding Bipolar Disorder in Affected Individuals
Bipolar literally means the two extreme ends, and in medical terms it is often related to the two extreme human behaviors; the Depressive state and the elevated state. Bipolar symptoms are difficult to locate especially in children as well as in adults. It can sometimes be an infliction that will disappear over a period of time if unattended, or it many manifest into a maniacal form over the years. Self diagnosis is difficult because the outward reaction of the affected individual alone is the criteria on which the bipolar disorder can be established. Bipolar disorder can cut across different age groups, and they only way to fix it is to counsel the affected individual as I observed the other day on a medical program on AT&T U-verse TV channel.
The first step to getting assistance is accepting the fact that the individual is bipolar in disposition and requires help from within the family. If the disorder has manifested to uncontrollable levels, then help from a qualified psychiatrist is a must. Treatments can include counseling, apart from drugs, or in extreme cases hospitalization. Although fixing the disease on individuals is a little difficult, the affected individual’s immediate family can start looking for relevant symptoms. Here are some symptoms that can point to the possibility of bipolar disease in adults as well as children.
The first and most common of all the symptoms is the sense of elevation or depressive mood of the individual. They will keep fluctuating between the two several times in a day or over longer periods. You can judge that from the positive attitudes they will radiate, and even hope to achieve targets that are humanly impossible. Moments later you should expect them to withdraw into a cocoon all to themselves. This can possibly be the first stage and if it is possible to bring the individual to a psychiatrist, then it should work finely. But this is also the stage where the individual may resist fervently remember.
The second sign of bipolarity is the tendency of the individual to get irritated, and when seen in individual with great power and authority can wreck havoc far beyond his or her domain. Victims can throw up tantrums over minor issue, be it the food, clothes or even the minor disturbance from the children next door. Some will even go to the extent of fixing their pain on imagined individuals or even imagined threats. In children it manifests in rebellion, usually against the parents and siblings. Being a little considerate to them can go a long way in treating such persons.
Grandiosity is another sign of bipolarity only if found in excess. It is very easy to mix it up with the common variety that normal individuals experience from time to time. But in the affected individual it persists and their grandiose thoughts may even get intensified with the passing of time. For them achieving is not a prime concern, the very thought of making such plans can itself be gratifying. So long as they keep to themselves and do not affect the society or the family in which they live, little harm comes. Once again the only source of solace for the individual can be his or her immediate family.
Besides, bipolar order victims can be talkative; positive or negative, get irritable, get morbid sexual thoughts and indulge in inappropriate social behavior. For some victims of bipolar disorder, the symptoms disappear over a period of time, while for some it can take a gargantuan proportion. And that is when a forced medical treatment is unavoidable. It can mean that the individual may even have to be confined to a sanatorium under legal authority.

A comparison of suicidal ideation between active duty military and military dependents outpatients: A retrospective study identifying treatment outcome using the Outcome Questionnaire – 45.2. $49.99 Suicidal ideation is significant within the active duty military and military dependent population. Suicidality in the active duty military population has been extensively researched, but there is limited research regarding suicidal ideation in the military dependent population. The purpose of this study is to identify the incidences and prevalence of suicidal ideation in active duty military and military dependent self-referring outpatient populations using the Outcome Questionnaire-45.2. Suicidal ideation is referred to as having frequent thoughts related to ending one’s life. There are several factors that influence suicidal ideation. Research has demonstrated that severe distress, emotional problems, and mental illness can influence suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Mental illnesses along with inadequate coping skills appear to facilitate this relationship. This study found that there was a statistically significant finding in treatment outcomes of individuals who were diagnosed with bipolar disorder. |

Bipolar Child: The Definitive and Reassuring Guide to Childhood’s Most Misunderstood Disorder — Third Edition $12.99 Since it first appeared on bookshelves, The Bipolar Child has made an indelible mark on the field of psychiatry and has become the resource that families rely upon. Now, with more than 200,000 copies sold, the first book about early-onset bipolar disorder is completely revised and expanded.Bipolar disorder—manic depression—was once thought to be rare in children. Now researchers are discovering not only that bipolar disorder can begin early in life, but that it is much more common than ever imagined. Yet the illness is often misdiagnosed and mistreated with medications that can exacerbate the symptoms. Why? Bipolar disorder manifests itself differently in children than in adults, and in children there is an overlap of symptoms with other childhood psychiatric disorders. As a result, these kids may be labeled with any of a number of psychiatric conditions: “ADHD,” “depression,” “oppositional defiant disorder,” “obsessive-compulsive disorder,” or “generalized anxiety disorder.” Too often they are treated with stimulants or antidepressants—medications that can actually worsen the bipolar condition.Since the publication of its first edition, The Bipolar Child has helped many thousands of families get to the root cause of their children’s behaviors and symptoms and find what they need to know. The Papoloses comprehensively detail the diagnosis, explain how to find good treatment and medications, and advise parents about ways to advocate effectively for their children in school. In this edition, a greatly expanded education chapter describes all the changes in educational law due to the 2004 reauthorization of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), and offers a multitude of ideas for parents and educators to help the children feel more comfortable in the academic environment. The book also contains crucial information about hospitalization, the |

Cognitive-Behavior Therapy $64 Now four decades old, cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is one of the most heavily researched—and effective—forms of psychotherapy, useful in treating both psychiatric and medical disorders. In this compact, richly detailed volume, 13 distinguished contributors show how CBT’s primary focus of identifying and changing maladaptive patterns of information processing and related behaviors is fully compatible with biological theories and treatments and can be combined with pharmacotherapy to optimize treatment results in clinical practice. In five chapters that illustrate the broadening reach and scope of CBT, these experts discuss • Schizophrenia—Shows clinicians how to incorporate the strengths of CBT into their daily practices for treating patients with schizophrenia. CBT methods (e.g., thought recording, examining the evidence, activity scheduling, graded task assignments, psychoeducation) can help relieve both positive and negative symptoms, reduce the stigma associated with the illness, improve depression and anxiety, and increase social skills.• Bipolar I disorder—Focuses on a concerted effort to educate the patient about bipolar disorder, which helps patients and families develop an “early warning” system and be prepared with interventions to forestall relapse. CBT methods also teach patients how to reduce common psychosocial stressors and adhere to their prescribed medications.• Computer-assisted CBT—Discusses an exciting new frontier that has already found excellent levels of patient acceptance and can reduce the amount of clinician time required for successful treatment. Using virtual reality and other technologies, computer-assisted CBT enhances therapy by providing interactive methods of learning and rehearsing CBT skills and by illustrating problem-solving methods with multimedia scenarios.• CBT for treating physical illnesses—Details the |
